Ethical Consumer App

Address global challenges one boycott at a time

Financial sanctions are commonly accepted as an extremely effective geopolitical instrument (recent Russia events are the outlier confirming the rule). Seeing it from a different angle, financial sanctions are not other than consumer pressure. This instrument can and should be facilitated on an individual above-international level. What we need is an app that gives you a personalized score for a product based on your individual set of ideals. Global challenges like pandemics, AI, cloning and gene modification, climate change, meteors – they all should be addressed primarily through organized consumer pressure and global organizations. Greenpeace 1,2 and 3 will publish their consumer pressure recommendations against cities, countries, global companies – whoever – and the followers will update their consuming habits automatically.

What are the specs of the app?

  • It recognizes products by their code, picture, bill scan, brand.
  • It assigns scores basing on user defined set of rules. You can follow some aggregator service, e.g. government provided patriotic or Greenpeace or Extinction Rebellion or Oxfam or your shade of Kosher – the app is a platform not a moral guide
  • It works in a nudge mode with alerts on high impact purchases and customized insights: “Hi John Doe, this is the BDS movement, we see that you buy X, can we suggest switching to Y with a great impact to the Palestinian cause? here is a short video on X vs Y”
  • The user can add multiple causes with different weights.
  • The user can hide the moral explanations (just show me the commutative score and don’t ruin my day)
  • The behavior of a cause can be set to fading out (remind me why don’t I buy this brand?)

I understand there must be a niche for these concerned consumer apps, such technology must be beneficial in numerous other aspects, for example helping with personal diet or helping to save money. But here I am interested in the political aspect – power will be diverted into the hands of NGOs, journalists, influencers. What will politicians even do for living when the lobbyists will divert their attention to journalists?
